Southern Illinois University Carbondale's aviation facilities are located both on SIUC's campus and at nearby Southern Illinois Airport. SIUC Campus Located within a short drive of the Shawnee National Forest, Southern Illinois University Carbondale has earned international acclaim as the second largest comprehensive university in Illinois. Founded in 1869, SIUC maintains more than 100 finely tuned academic programs that lead to associate, baccalaureate, master's, specialist's, doctoral and professional degrees. AIn the Fall of 2004, a grand total of 21,589 students were enrolled at SIUC. Over 30 percent of SIUCs in-state new freshmen come from Cook county alone. Regardless of their chosen field of study, students are challenged to grow intellectually in this supportive, but competitive, environment. Fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, SIUC's faculty-student ratio averages 18.21:1. SIUC's student body is diverse. International students from more than 100 different Minority students have long succeeded here. SIUC ranks Fourth in the nation among traditionally white schools for the number of black students earning degrees. Administrators are committed to a variety of programs that offer academic support to African-American and Hispanic students. While undergraduate education remains a priority, SIUC's faculty have gained recognition for cutting-edge research projects. Future generations will benefit from projects involving issues such as Illinois coal, soybeans, corn, water resources, car and airplane brakes, and aquaculture. In fiscal year 1999, externally funded grants and contracts for research, training, and service projects at SIUC totaled nearly $52 million. Service is synonymous with SIUC. The $6.3 million Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center at the edge of campus nurtures fledgling businesses, and the University's Broadcasting Service provides educational programming to more than 60,000 households in the bottom third of the state. The University has also taken a lead role in training health professionals for central and southern Illinois. Carbondale, an economic center of Southern Illinois and home to Southern Illinois University's Carbondale campus, has been cited in a recent study as one of America's 50 most desirable places. Only a few hours from Chicago, St. Louis and Memphis, the University sits amid rolling hills, farmlands and orchards just 60 miles above the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. Carbondale is easily accessible. The Williamson County airport (618-993-3353) offers regional commuter flights and is located 16 miles east of campus, just off of interstate 57. Amtrak provides rail services out of its Chicago hub, and Greyhound offers bus service in and out of town. Once you have arrived in Carbondale, the Saluki Express mass transit provides local bus services to and from campus.
The Herbert H. Howell Memorial Library is located on the ground floor of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts Building, on the main campus of SIUC in Room 9C. This room is inside the Airway Science area of the ASA Building near the elevator in the northeast corner of the building. American aviation pioneer Herbert H. Howell was a visionary, planner, and engineer whose inspired work contributed perhaps more than any other to the modern airport. As the planner of Dulles International Airport in Washington, DC, Howell brought American civil aviation into the jet age. Herbert Howell started in airport work in 1930 and was in his fifty-second year of active work in airport planning and engineering when he died in 1982. During the final months of his life, he was engaged in setting up the Herbert H. Howell Aviation Library and the Herbert H. Howell Aviation Management Endowment Fund in support of aviation education at SIUC. This work is now being carried on by his friends and his widow, Mrs. LaVerne Howell. Just prior to his death, Mr. Howell bequeathed his substantial personal library to the aviation management program at SIUC. Still being cataloged by interns and students, the Howell library totals over 400 linear feet of personal papers, airport master plan reports, periodicals, government reports and books. It also contains a sizeable amount of Equipment, aviation-related photographs, and slides. The Herbert H. Howell Aviation Library is a valuable resource and is available to all aviation-related students and researchers at Southern Illinois University. Your contribution of books, periodicals, and other materials, or funds to assist in maintenance and acquisition, will help this collection grow. Your support will make this library an even more complete living memorial that is contributing to the education of America's future aviation leaders. (all gifts are tax deductible)

Training Devices SIU Aviation makes use of many various types of training aids or devices to help in educating its students. Some examples of these are the FRASCA 141 and FRASCA 142 IFR flight simulators used in helping students with their instrument training and the PCATD trainers, which are computer based flight simulators which students may use at any time to practice their flight techniques. SIU now also utilizes a Modular Flight Deck (MFD) in the Turbine Transition course.
Transportation Education Center The Transportation Education Center (TEC) is a student-oriented educational concept designed to promote education to careers serving the students in SIUC's applied transportation degree programs. The TEC will unite the Automotive and Aviation degree programs, students, and faculty in one location at the Southern Illinois Airport. These programs have proven themselves with over 150 years of providing quality graduates to the transportation industry. This tradition of success and standard of excellence has propelled these transportation programs to national prominence, as the Automotive program has been ranked first in the nation for 1999, and the Aviation program had the nation's top male and female student pilots in 1999. The TEC concept envisions adding 259,700 square feet, including a main building with several smaller buildings, at an estimated cost of $39 million to serve the Automotive Technology, Aviation Flight, Aviation Management, and Aviation Technologies programs.
