The following was taken from a letter sent to me by Dr. NewMyer:

Dear Aviation Flight Faculty:

I am just back from the Aviation Accreditation Board International Meeting where I learned that the SIUC Aviation Flight Program has been fully accredited for five years, with no restrictions.  This is the best form of accreditation that a program can receive since it requires no interim visit by the accrediting body until the five year accreditation period is completed (in 2014 in our case).

I want to thank all of you for the job that you do every day.  That work has contributed greatly to the quality of our program and the fact that we received accreditation in this manner.  Second, I would like to thank those who assisted in preparing the Self Study Document for AABI, including David Jaynes, John Voges, Kathy Lloyd, Keith Mortag and Lori Robertson.

Accreditation means that we are now nationally accredited by the association that accredits aviation programs from an academic perspective…..this is IN ADDITION TO the regional accreditation provided by the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges and the Certification provided by the Federal Aviation Administration.  It is a big deal since it affirms that our Aviation Flight program meets national aviation accreditation standards related to curriculum, faculty, equipment and related items.  It should now be a matter of pride to you that we are accredited by AABI since some of our competition is not (U of I, Indiana State and Lewis, for example).  For additional “advantages of accreditation” and a list of who has been accredited through 2008, see www.aabi.aero

Note that, at this time, neither the SIUC Aviation Management program nor the SIUC Aviation Technologies program are accredited by AABI.  AVMAF will be working on the accreditation of the AVM program over the next several years.

Again, thank you for your part in making Aviation Flight an excellent program!

Sincerely,

David A. NewMyer, Ph.D., Professor and Chair
