CARBONDALE, Ill. -; Twelve students enrolled in Southern Illinois University Carbondale's aviation programs received scholarships during the recent fall aviation banquet.
Students learned of the honors during the Oct. 26 banquet at SIUC’s Student Center. The Aviation Management Society, an SIUC registered student organization, sponsors the banquet. Some of the scholarships honor SIUC graduates and all support students enrolled in the aviation management, aviation flight and aviation technologies programs.
The aviation programs are part of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts.
Students received more than $30,000 in scholarships during the “Aviation in the Future” banquet. That figure includes $17,000 from SIUC aviation alumnus Michael R. Peters with the Michael R. Peters-Aviation Interviews.com Aviation Scholarships.
More than 200 people, including students, faculty, alumni and general aviation enthusiasts attended the banquet. Jack J. Pelton, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Cessna Aircraft Co., delivered the keynote speech. He gave an overview of Cessna and its product lines, and presented “a great view of the future of aviation, and I think, a very positive view,” said David A. NewMyer, chair of the Department of Aviation and Management Flight.
NewMyer noted that Cessna was among many companies participating in the 13th annual career fair earlier in the day. The world’s leading manufacturer of general aviation aircraft sent two jet aircraft from the Wichita, Kan.-based company for the career fair, in addition to seven employees from the company’s human resources and flight test departments. The employees talked with classes over two days, and also participated in the career fair.
“That’s quite a bit of support for a career fair and banquet from one company,” NewMyer said.
